Adult Training

The training programme for 2010/11 has been developed and will be on general release by the end of August 2010. If you have any questions with the programme or your would like a module added which is not currently being delivered please contact your District ADC(AT) or myself on isobelaitchison@btinternet.com.

To help identify your own training needs and work towards your Wood Badge it is important that you have an up-to-date Personal Learning Plan. Help is available for this through your Assistant District Commissioner (Adult Training): Ann Gilchrist, Falkirk, Ellen Nicol, West Lothian, Rosemary Fletcher, Stirling and Trossachs and Alex Steele, Clackmannanshire and local Training Advisers. Recognition of previous learning activities is part of the process and can help towards achieving the modules for the Wood Badge without having to produce copious amounts of paperwork (helps also toward saving the environment).

It will also help ADC(AT)’s to identify individuals who have joined the Association and require to be matched up with a Training Adviser (TA). If you have recently joined and/or are in the process of volunteering please ask about Adult Training and who your TA will be. This information will be passed to the ADC(AT) who can make the necessary arrangements to help ensure that you meet the requirements of the Warrant within the prescribed time period.

Forthcoming Training Activities for your diaries are listed below. Please contact the named individual by e-mail of your intention to attend or your local Assistant District Commissioner (Adult Training)

NIGHTS AWAY (Module 16)
ACTIVITIES OUTDORS (Module 17)
PRACTICAL SKILLS (Module 18)
These three modules cover the skills and knowledge required to enable adults to plan and run residential experiences. It also enables adults to plan and run exciting, safe and development activities outdoors for young people in their Section. The training also covers practical skills to benefit the young people in their Section.

The opportunity to attend this training before the changes take place with Module 16, will be delivered through West Lothian District on the following dates:

Saturday 4 September 2010: Theory training from 9.00 to 2.00pm (Finish time will depend on the number of participants and discussion generated)

Friday 1 October – Sunday 3 October 2010: Practical aspects and practical skill development.

Further information on this training can be obtained from Ellen Nicoll on 01506 439823 or ellen.nicol2@btinternet.com

UPDATE ON MODULE 16 NIGHTS AWAY
On 1 Nov 2010, the current Module 16: Nights Away will change and become two modules:

1. Module 16: Introduction to Residential Experiences. This module aims to give an introduction to the place, value and organisation of residential experiences. It is designed to introduce learners to residential experiences and their importance in Scouting, and give them information about the Nights Away Permit Scheme. This will be the obligatory module to complete for the Section Leaders Wood Badge.,

2. Module 38: Skills for Residential Experiences. This module aims to enable adults to acquire the appropriate skills to plan and run successful residential experiences for the young people. This module reflects the skills needed for the Nights Away Permit, and will help Leaders to gain and consolidate skills. This module is a specialist module and not an obligatory module for a Section Leaders Wood Badge.

Further information on the piloting of the above training will be provided in the next newsletter from Ellen Nicol.

SKILLS OF LEADERSHIP (Module 8)
Module 8 is required for all appointments and requires to be completed before an individual can be awarded their Wood Badge. The module covers the knowledge, skills and attitudes required to be an effective leader of other adults and of young people. Topics covered include the following: Systematic planning, functions of leadership, leadership roles in a group and leadership styles.

The training will take place on Wednesday 29 September 2010 in the Beechwood Scout Hall, Stirling.  Timings are 1900 – 2130. To register your interest with this training please contact Rosemary Fletcher on 01786 465182 or at rosemary@coxithill.freeserve.co.uk. The cost of this training will be £5 payable at the event.

TRAINING ADVISERS
SHQ is planning to have an event for ADC(AT)s, Trainers and Training Advisers during the weekend 1-3 Oct 10 at Tulliallan. This will give attendees the opportunity to meet to discuss progress, consider items of concern and issues and to develop the support offered to individuals. Further details will be circulated once the programme for the event has been agreed. The event is being advertised in the current edition of Scout Scotland and a link has been provided Scottish Scouts for further details.

If you would like to attend this event please contact your ADC(T) for further information and to let them know of your intention to apply utilizing the forms on the website.

MANAGEMENT TRAINING
A revised management training programme is due to be launched at the end of August 2010. Further details will be given in the next e-newsletter once released from SHQ.

TRAIN THE TRAINER EVENT
A training event is being planned to deliver Module 28: Facilitating and Module 29: Guide to Presenting.  The training will take place over a weekend and participants will require to be prepared to deliver a short presentation on the Sunday morning.  Further details will be published in this newsletter and through the District ADC(AT)’s, however if you feel that this course will be of benefit to you then contact your ADC(AT) in the first instance and register your interest.  Due to the practical nature of the course places will be limited.

IDENTIFYING YOUR NEEDS
Over the next few months, The Scout Association will be carrying out some research to identify your needs in terms of how you as an individual interact with Scouting (ie the services you access, the support your require, the way you communicate with us and vice versa), as well as how we can better support you with the tasks that you carry out in your role.

The research will be carried out in a number of ways and of particular interest is the survey for those involved in running sections - specifically Group Scout Leaders, Section Leaders, Assistant Section Leaders and Section Assistants, as well as Group Chairmen, Secretaries, Treasurers and Administrators and focuses on your needs in relation to the membership database.

Outcomes - The initial findings from this research will help the Scout Association to identify what your needs really are, and will inform a number of key pieces of work.  This includes, but is not limited to, the future direction of the membership system.  Please note that at this stage, this is purely a requirements and knowledge gathering exercise; the intended outcome is to use the results of the analysis to inform the future direction of the above pieces of work.

THOUGHT FOR THE MONTH
The most important object in Scout training is to educate, not instruct.
