Training Diary

Adult Training is an important part of your personal development.  Having completed the required modules and achieved the Wood Badge it is important that you continue your learning.  This will help to ensure that you continue to expand on your personal skills and keep up to date with policy changes and trends.  Attached to this Email is a leaflet outlining Adult Support and Training Skills.  It is a short but useful read and I advise you to have a read through it and possibly complete the Support Details.  This will help to ensure that you have a Training Adviser.

The training programme for 2010/11 is in the process of being developed therefore if the training you require has not been scheduled please let me know by emailing isobelaitchison@btinternet.com and arra ngements can be made to accommodate your, and possibly, other individuals requests. It would also be of benefit if you could let either myself, or the ADC(AT) within your Districts whether you prefer week night training, weekend training or a mixture of the two.

To help identify your own training needs and work towards your Wood Badge it is important that you have an up-to-date Personal Learning Plan.  Help is available for this through your Assistant District Commissioner (Adult Training): Ann Gilchrist, Falkirk, Ellen Nicol, West Lothian, Rosemary Fletcher, Stirling and Trossachs and Alex Steele, Clackmannanshire and local Training Advisers.  Recognition of previous learning activities is part of the process and can help towards achieving the modules for the Wood Badge without having to produce copious amounts of paperwork (helps also toward saving the environment).

A Scout Association leaflet entitled "Training, Skills and Support for You - An Overview of Adult Training" has been passed electronically to the DCs for distribution to Leaders and should be with you shortly.

Forthcoming Training Activities for your diaries are listed below. Please contact the named representative by e-mail of your intention to attend or your local Assistant District Commissioner (Adult Training).

Adult Training E-News

Issue 23, April 2010 of the Adult Training eNews which has been sent out electronic (not on the website at the time this was written) includes an article on supporting the growth in recruitment activities.  An ongoing learning module has been written called ‘Ongoing Learning – Effective Recruiters’.  The package has been designed to train those involved in face to face recruitment of adults and young people at recruitment events.  More information can be found in the April/May 2010 Scouting magazine.  The training material can be downloaded from the Scout Information Catalogue.

A fact sheet has been written FS 500017 Design and Deliver an Effective Recruitment Event.  The fact sheet is designed to guide individuals and/or teams involved in planning and running a recruitment event.

SAFEGUARDING TRAINING ARRANGEMENTS – APPOINTMENT REVIEW
You may be aware that the January 2010 edition of Policy, Organisation and Rules introduces a new requirement for adults to have undertaken approved safeguarding training at the point that their review is undertaken.

This will ensure that individuals are kept up-to-date on this essential area of work – with all adults in Scouting receiving this training at least every five years.  This training obligation may be met through two routes:

1. Participation in the NSPCC Keeping Children Safe online training package, in the period since the individual’s last appointment review.  Further details about Keeping Children Safe are available from the Scout Information Centre by calling 0845 300 1818.

2. Participation in a training session to ensure people meet the approved safeguarding training objectives in relation to Appointments Process: Rule 5(d) of Policy, Organisation and Rules.  Safeguarding Awareness Co-ordinators have received training materials to assist them in delivering training sessions meeting these objectives. This training should have occurred in the period since the adult’s last appointment review.

A key element of this training is to ensure an understanding of Scouting’s safeguarding arrangements.

Please do not hesitate to email the Safeguarding team if further information is required.

TRAINING ADVISERS
The Role of the Training Adviser is to support and assess participants through their training up to the award of Wood Badge.  For this appointment there is a requirement for the individual to have completed Module 25: Assessing Learning and have a good awareness of the current Adult Training Scheme.  A link has been provided to the Fact Sheet FS 330070 (May 04) Role of the Training Adviser for further information.

If you think you would like to become involved as a Training Adviser please contact your ADC(T) for further information and to have a chat about their own experiences from taking on this essential, but worthwhile role.

SHQ is planning to have an event for Training Advisers during the weekend 2-3 Oct 10 to allow Training Advisers the opportunity to meet with other Training Advisers to discuss progress, consider items of concern and issues and to develop the support offered to individuals.  Further details will be circulated once the programme for the event has been agreed.  If you would like to influence the content of the event please let me know any ideas or suggestions to help shape the event by emailing isobelaitchison@btinternet.com

THOUGHT FOR THE MONTH
Two caterpillars were sitting on a cabbage leaf having a chat. Suddenly, they heard a loud swishing noise, and looking up, saw a beautiful butterfly flying overhead. The first caterpillar looked to the other, shook his head and said,
"You’ll never get me up in one of those things"

MORAL
At some point you have to stop being a caterpillar in order to become a butterfly

REFLECTION
• In what way are you like the caterpillar?
• What represents the ‘butterfly’ or change for you?
• What do you require in the way of training to manage your role?

Let your Training Advisor know of your needs and these will either be met locally and/or built into the next training programme.
